Every student traveling to Australia have the same question: Will I find a job?

The answer is: Yes, if you want to work, you will find a job! Australia has a strongly developed economy which cause the ongoing demand for labor. Since getting work visas in this country is not the easiest, most employers are very happy to employ international students who have a good reputation in Australia in terms of job responsibilities and reliability. This includes both permanent and seasonal jobs, but especially work in customer service.

Students in Australia can officially start working only after their first day of school. So in case you arrive to Australia earlier, what most students do, you have some time to explore and become familiar with the new environment. This is also a good time to start searching for a job and get ready for it. During the studies, each student has a limited working time of 40 hours/2 weeks. However, you can work full time during the school holidays or between different courses.

What to Prepare

In order to work in Australia or to start searching for a job at all, you will need a few things:

  • Resume - We recommend preparing it before departure and if you need any help just let us know
  • Tax file number (TFN) - we're here to help you to request one right after your arrival
  • Australian bank account - most of the banks are offering special rates for students
  • Know (at least partially) how the Taxation and Superannuation in Australia

Where and how to search

There are several ways to find a job in Australia:

  • Friends - have your eyes and ears open and don't be shy to ask for a job in your surroundings (at school, at the party, on the beach, at the accommodation ..)

  • Facebook and other social media - you will find many job offers here, especially in the various Facebook groups dedicated to international travelers

  • Australian newspapers (such as the Sydney Morning Herald)

  • The street - by literally walking and distributing resumes. This method is very effective especially for work in hospitality as many cafes and restaurants do not officially publish the job position.

  • Websites
