Student visa at New Zealand
You can choose from a wide range of schools and courses, ranging from studying English through vocational schools, technical institutes to universities. The length of the visa depends on the duration of the chosen course, for a maximum of 4 years for one course or 5 years for a combination of courses (Patway visa).
To be granted a student visa, you need to show:
- confirmation of planned study - Offer of place from your school
- sufficient funds to cover your costs during your stay in New Zealand, study fees and cost of a return ticket,
- health insurance for the entire stay,
- genuine interest to study in New Zealand,
- integrity and good health.
Student visa allows you to work for 20 hours a week in addition to studying if you are studying an English course that is longer than 14 weeks at a Category 1 school.
If you are studying at a vocational school, you can work 20 hours a week alongside the school if your course is 2 years long or more, or if you are studying a course that gives you the points to apply for a permanent residence as a skilled migrant (level 5 or higher or level 4 for selected professions). During the school holidays, you can work full time if the course is longer than 1 academic year and contains at least 120 credits. With fewer credits, you can only work full time during Christmas holidays.
If you plan to study at University, in most cases your spouse will be able to apply for full time work permit (if you can prove your relationshil accordingly)
